As a Black woman living in Nashville, TN, I’m often reminded of the rich and complex history of my people, both in this city and in this country. And as a portrait photographer who specializes in capturing the beauty and diversity of families, I believe that celebrating Black history is not only important, but essential to understanding and honoring our shared humanity. In this blog post, I’ll explain why.
Acknowledge the Contributions of Black History:
The first reason why celebrating Black history matters is because it acknowledges the many contributions that Black people have made to society, despite facing countless obstacles and injustices. From the arts to the sciences, from politics to sports, Black people have enriched and transformed the world in countless ways. By recognizing and honoring these achievements, we help to counteract the erasure and marginalization of Black voices and experiences.
Learn from the Struggles of Black History:
The second reason why celebrating Black history matters is because it teaches us valuable lessons about the struggles and resilience of Black people in the face of oppression. From slavery to segregation to mass incarceration to police brutality, Black people have endured unimaginable hardship and yet have continued to fight for justice and dignity. By studying and understanding these struggles, we can gain empathy, insight, and inspiration for our own lives and struggles.
Embrace the Diversity:
The third reason why celebrating Black history matters is because it highlights the diversity and complexity of Black identity and culture. Black people are not a monolithic group, but rather a rich tapestry of ethnicities, languages, religions, and traditions. By exploring and celebrating this diversity, we can deepen our understanding of ourselves and others, and build bridges across differences.
Engage in the Present:
The final reason why celebrating Black history matters is because it empowers us to engage in the present and shape the future. By recognizing the achievements, struggles, and diversity of Black people, we can cultivate a more just, equitable, and inclusive society for all. Whether it’s through voting, activism, education, or art, we can all play a role in creating a better world.
